My favourite zoo of all time
The best memories where made here, the place to be in Far North Queensland !!!!!
I really loved my time here at the Banana Barracks! Paula and her team are absolute legends and run a great operation. I spent loads of time reading up about different hostels and am really glad that I chose here. Ive read that other hostels tell you theres work when there isnt so you go there, lie about how long the waiting lists are so you end up sitting around for ages, confiscate your passport and then try and rip you off out of your deposit at the end for bogus reasons. Glad to say that nothing like this happened at all at the Barracks. The first time that I called up they said to hold off coming up for a bit as at the time there wasnt enough work for the amount of people that were there. Happily when I called the second time there was space and I headed straight up. The hostel has a great communal space where everyone hangs out (much better than Hotel Tully up the road) and is generally full of pretty sound people. A few people got kicked out when I was there for being complete idiots which kept the peace nicely. The security guy Glen also deserves a mention as hes really fair and keeps the peace really well whilst still letting you party pretty hard. The floors, kitchen & bathrooms are cleaned every day and on Monday the whole place is cleaned which keeps it nice and tidy.Being honest theres a couple of things that youd want changed. The pool doesnt seem to get cleaned, a few of the mattresses are pretty old, the rooms could do with a paint and the small table top oven sucks and gets so hot its hard to use but apart from that the place is great! Tully is the wettest place in Australia so Id say its best not to leave it until you only have 3 months left to do 3 months farm work as theres a good chance you might have some days work rained off. Id recommend the Barracks to anyone and actually miss the place now Ive got back to Melbourne!
Love this place full of fun times and good people loads of work and the best receptionist paula love you
Good cuz it got me a job in 2 weeks - but I can't say I enjoyed my time there. If you're a backpacker who loves living in hostels and being surrounded by other backpackers, then you'll love it here. If you're a couple looking for a quiet place to live while doing your farm work, maybe look into getting a sharehouse!
